After reading over five books that made me question why I even bother with this hobby anymore, this one reminded me why I love it. Lately, so many books have been 100% spice, 0% romance, and 0% plot. Not this one. This book is the very reason I love reading. One thing about Jay McLean is that she writes books that make you feel the love between the characters in a tangible way. When you finish her books, you feel like you’ve experienced love in its purest form.
Harlow is a strong female main character, maybe one of the strongest. She’s straightforward and knows what she wants. Her love for Jace knows no bounds, and I love that. Usually, it’s the male character who goes above and beyond to demonstrate his limitless love, but not in this book. Harlow is fiercely protective of Jace.
She doesn’t have an easy life, yet she treats everyone around her with love. She doesn’t let her circumstances make her bitter, and I admire that. I adored how supportive her friends and father are.
The way she supports Jace is one of the best parts of this book. I honestly think that supporting him the way she does is a crucial part of how she heals herself and him.
Jace is one of those characters that you carry in your heart. He’s been dealing with so much after the loss of his parents and having to take care of his alcoholic grandfather. My heart broke for him. No one should have to go through what he has.
Harlow was definitely what he needed to grow, and the support she provided was something he’d never experienced before. His best friend is one of the best as well; everyone deserves a Jonah in their life.
The side characters were all great. They played a big part in the main characters’ growth, and I love how everyone helps each other out. They’re like their own little family.
As for Harlow’s mom, she can choke on spit for all I care.
Grieving or not, she deserves all the hate.
