Lylah James โ€“ A vow of hate & A vow of forever

SYNOPSIS:

“Once upon a time…”

Hate consumed him.
Love wrecked me.
That night changed both our lives, turning our beginning into something toxic. We were poison together, and there was no antidote.

Our story began like any other fairy tale ended.
With a beautiful wedding.
One kiss.
Two rings.
Three vows.
Killian Spencer became my lawfully wedded husband and I, his dutiful wife.

But he was no Prince Charming. He didn’t come to save me… and he vowed there would be no happily ever after.
And me?
Just like the legends I’d read as a little girl, I always thought I’d be the princess in my fairy tale.
Well, I was the villain of our love story.

“Till death do us part…”(TW: This book deals with the aftermath of an accident, which leads to the character’s depression and PTSD. Since this is a hate-to-love romance, there are quite some scenes that you might find disturbing between the two main characters.)

Would I read again? Yes

Would I read future books from this author? Definitely

MY MAIN REASON FOR AN OVERALL 5 STAR RATING: A VOW OF FOREVER MADE UP FOR EVERYTHING I THOUGHT A VOW OF HATE DIDNโ€™T HAVE

This book had me from the minute the author dropped the blurb, so I couldnโ€™t wait to start it on the release day. I literally took a day off to read this because the last thing I needed was clients bothering me while Iโ€™m trying to finish the book.

Julianna Romano, aka Julianna Spencer or Jules, is definitely a hard person to not like, so instantly, I was drawn to her and the way she deals with Kilianโ€™s assholeness, and trust me, the guy is definitely one of the biggest assholes Iโ€™ve ever read about. I think I went into this thinking that they were both broken individuals looking for a way out, and thatโ€™s why I allowed myself to be fucked royally because, by the time I reached 50%, I was cursing my life out. Here I am thinking this is a story about 2 grieving people thrown together to heal each other, but no jokes on me because while one is a complete asshole, the other is the fucking cause of said asshole behavior.

In the beginning, I hated the H because thereโ€™s mean, and then thereโ€™s this fucker named Kilian Spencer. I know heโ€™s supposed to be grieving and whatnot, but come on, he took was an asshole to the extreme. This was one of the fucked up shit the guy said right after his sexual encounter with the h.

“My fingers were just inside another woman. Her cunt juices are now smeared all over yours.”

As I said, the guy is a mess, and donโ€™t get me started on him calling the h Beasty, the same name everyone calls her because of her scars. The h had patience because I wouldโ€™ve probably killed him in the most brutal way possible.

By the 50% mark, I was pissed at both characters because, come on, nobody taught yโ€™all how to communicate? I mean, I felt for them, I did, but a lot couldโ€™ve been avoided if they just communicated and if the h stopped thinking about herself and started thinking about her grieving husband, who she loves with all her supposedly heart. She literally saw the guy grieve for 3 years in the cruelest way possible and still said nothing. Again, this is someone the heroine loved since she was 17 years old, but still sat back and looked at him destroy himself and her.

I know this is fiction, but I really couldnโ€™t deal with the betrayal, and because Iโ€™m down for toxic books, I loved every moment. All the tears shed, curses spewed, pillow threw I loved the whole process, and thatโ€™s how you know the author is a great one because I donโ€™t get so worked up over certain things.

I wondered how this author would take a relationship built on lies with fragile trust and turn it all around, but she did, and by the ending of a vow of hate, I was happy, but I still felt like I needed more so when she announced a vow of forever I pre-ordered same day.

A vow of forever wasnโ€™t just filled with rainbows and unicorns, and I loved that about the sequel. The realness of their relationship in this book was handled, and this is what made me give a 5-star rating because the couple didnโ€™t just have a HEA with many unresolved issues and secrets. This is one of my high recs because the author took a tragedy and changed it into something amazing.
